Leadership I Training

     Leadership I is designed to foster and develop the essential skills and qualities of a great leader. Geared toward students in Grade 10 and up this program is perfect for those looking to gain job skills, experience, volunteer hours, and have a whole lot of fun!

     For 12 weeks from late January until the end of April, we meet for one evening a week to work on leadership styles, communication, time management and professionalism, personal development, and theory on group management and working with children.

     Weeknight sessions are perfectly complimented by weekend trips including overnights at Sasamat Outdoor Centre where youth can opt to gain certifications in Standard First Aid, Food-safe BC, High-Five, and RCABC Canoeing levels.

     This program builds the essential skills and knowledge necessary to help land rewarding jobs and impact the community around you. Make new friends, gain volunteer hours, references for your resume, experience running programs for children, and even a chance to win a scholarship!



The 12 week program involves weeknight activity sessions one night per week from late January through to the end of April with 3 weekends at Sasamat and a one day workshop in Vancouver.

Registration opens on September 10th. There is a nominal registration fee, with additional costs for each weekend trip and certifications. Transportation is provided.
Participants registered at Port Moody Rec Centre and Douglas College David Lam Campus will attend weekly meetings over the 12 weeks in addition to attending the 3 weekends here at Sasamat Outdoor Centre and a one-day trip to Vancouver.
Participants must complete 3 of the 4 weekends to receive a Leadership Certificate at the end of the program.  

Leadership Training prepares you to apply for work at agencies operating children's programs. Graduates have been employed at neighbourhood houses, community centres and summer camps.

Note: If student is unable to attend a full weekend - partial participation is ok - parent must pick child up. There is no discount for only attending partial weekends


       Please note payment must be received on-line or a cheque mailed to Sasamat Outdoor Centre prior to the start of the program.  You will not be considered to be registered until your payment has been received in full.  

     Our office must be notified of any cancellations at least 14 days prior to the start date of the event in order to receive a refund.  There is no refund if less than 14 days notice of cancellation is given. See Refund Policy below.


     Three weekend field trips are required for basic program certification. Please choose the weekends and certifications you wish to register for. Note the dates certifications are offered below. Please do not choose more than 2 per weekend.

Upon completion of the Leadership Training, participants are invited to join us for our annual Recognition Night on May 5, 2015 at 6:30pm. This event will be hosted at Sasamat Outdoor Centre.

Refund Policy:

Youth unable to attend a weekend session for any reason will receive a refund, less a $30 cancellation/administration fee, provided our office is notified fifteen days before the start of the session. No refunds for regular weekly meetings. Registrations for any Certification will be fully refunded if youth is not able to take due to the certification program being full. Please note that the cancellation/administration fee is non-refundable/non-transferable. Refunds can take up to 4 weeks.
