What a fantastic summer!
This year more than 1600 children and youth attended programs at Sasamat Outdoor Centre. Our Sasamite program had 4 and 5 year olds paddling on the lake, exploring the woods and streams and creating crazy bear masks, while our Counsellor in Training program launched older youth on the path to being camp leaders themselves. In between were daily bus loads of day campers, piles of resident camper luggage, and a lot of singing, silliness, sunshine and smiles.
None of this would be possible without the energy that our summer staff bring with them, their zeal for camp, and their ability to entertain and mentor children and youth. This year's summer staff really stood out as an exceptional group of young leaders, excited for their jobs, positive in their outlook, demanding of themselves, and just a lot of fun.
When summer camp ends the silence is deafening. Sasamat quickly transforms itself back into hosting schools and community groups through the fall season, but the long days of winter feel closer and summer ever further away.
And then, very quickly, summer is back on our minds as we begin the planning process for the next year. There is much to be done - the duller administrative tasks of operating a camp and outdoor centre - but it keeps us focused on why we do what we do and keeps us looking forward to those sunny summer days at camp.
Thanks to all of our staff and campers for a very special summer at Sasamat Outdoor Centre.
