Youth Overnight Camp presents a wonderful new challenge for campers who have outgrown day camp – though previous camp experience isn’t a requirement! – as they graduate to sleeping over at Sasamat. Our staff work hard to ensure every camper is supported to have a successful and memorable stay.

Upon arrival, campers will be placed in groups with seven peers of similar age plus one counsellor, as Youth Overnight Camp has a 1:8 camper-to-staff ratio. Sasamat Outdoor Centre camp staff are high achieving senior high school or post-secondary students that undergo a six day in house training program prior to the start of summer camp. Campers will enjoy a program that samples all of Sasamat’s outdoor activity areas, providing opportunities to try all that Sasamat has to offer.

Youth Overnight Campers have an action-packed week full of outdoor education and opportunities to learn new skills such as independence, creating memories that will last a lifetime.  The two oldest groups of Youth Overnight Camp will also experience an off-site overnight camping adventure.

Youth Overnight Camp, like all programs at Sasamat, is founded on the values of inclusion, respect and compassion. Campers are encouraged to try new things, but they always have the choice to decide what’s best for themselves. If a challenge arises while at camp, our highly trained staff will work with campers to problem solve and help each camper to have a successful experience. We know sleeping away from home can be a daunting next step for the whole family, but we find once a camper tries it, they can’t wait to return! If you’re concerned about an overnight camp experience, we encourage you to call our office to speak with the team.

Before & After Care

Before and After Care is extended daytime care on Monday morning and Friday afternoon for families that may need longer child care hours. Before and After Care is based out of Port Moody Recreation Centre and is run by Sasamat Camp Counsellors. Participants will get to enjoy the recreation centre’s playground, as well as low organizational games or activities. The cost is $10 per day, and the hours are:

8:00am until the buses depart the Recreation Centre on Monday (i.e. 9:30am)

When the buses arrive end of day on Friday (i.e. 3:45pm) until 5:30pm

Accommodation

Youth Overnight Campers will sleep in a cottage, yurt or cabin, sharing accommodation with their assigned group. Our youngest campers are typically placed in the yurts, where two counsellors will sleep in the same room as the campers. Our mid-aged Youth Overnight Campers will be in the cottages, where counselling staff will sleep in the same building in a small adjacent staff room. Occasionally, when logistics do not permit otherwise, our oldest Youth Overnight Campers will be placed in a traditional cabin where counselling staff will sleep in the cabin next door.

Bathrooms and showers are centrally located in the Main Lodge. Groups will have scheduled shower times over the course of the week.

Food

Youth Overnight Campers will enjoy full food service meals prepared by Sasamat’s awesome in-house chefs. With a focus on nutrition and nourishment, menus are selected to provide variety and great taste. Each day, campers will enjoy three full meals, afternoon snack, and evening snack. Youth Overnight Campers will join teen campers and trippers for meals in the dining hall. If a camper has a dietary restriction, our kitchen is usually able accommodate special diets. For campers with serious dietary restrictions, families should call the office in advance to discuss special requirements.
