Voyageurs introduces teens to the incredible and peaceful backcountry canoe route. The Voyageur program is a six-day overnight program that runs from Sunday to Friday, with five days/four nights spent on out-trip. Pre-trip, campers will have a day in camp to get to know one another, and prepare for the out-trip. Instructors will review participant gear, packing processes, paddling practice and canoe safety, and what to expect. Before departing, instructors will ensure campers are feeling physically and emotionally ready to depart.

Once on trip, campers typically will settle into the paces of being on out-trip, and experience the joys of canoeing in an area rich with biodiversity. Campers will be taught a strong environmental ethic, practicing what it means to camp with limited trace in the ideal setting for outdoor learning. As an introductory tripping program, Voyageurs welcomes all participants regardless of former experience. Our out-tripping instructors are seasoned youth workers and experts when it comes to outdoor education, technical camping skills, and risk management. The Voyageur camp will excite and challenge participants, leaving campers with new perspectives and appreciation of the great outdoors and wilderness adventures.

Voyageurs, like all programs at Sasamat, is founded on the values of inclusion, respect and compassion. Voyageurs is an adventure-based program that requires a certain level of fitness and maturity for a safe and successful trip. To ensure your camper is a good fit for this program, you will be prompted to complete a program questionnaire regarding program suitability during registration.

Voyageur Trip Locations

This years participants in our Voyageur program will have the opportunity to paddle Pitt Lake or Stave Lake. Voyageur out-trip location will be announced in 2025 after trip permits are confirmed, and scouting trips are completed, both of which cannot be done prior to registration.

Pitt Lake

Pitt Lake is a rare tidal lake and the second largest lake in the Lower Mainland. Boasting a diverse and unique ecosystem, most of Pit Lake’s shores are protected by three provincial parks. Pitt Lake holds scenic views and traditional waterways that that define the area’s natural beauty.

Stave Lake

Stave Lake Reservoir is one of the largest lakes in the Lower Mainland, stretching just over 20km North to South on its main arm. Fed by the Stave River, the lake was dammed in the early 20th century, growing it by an additional two-thirds in size. Stave lake is enjoyed by many for its lush wildlife, fresh water, and beautiful mountain and glacial views. Campers traveling by canoe will be able to enjoy some amazing shoreline campsites and spectacular sunsets.

 Transportation

Numerous transportation options are available. Learn more about transportation for overnight camp.

Food

Food always tastes better when prepared outdoors, and Sasamat strives to ensure tripping meals are delicious! Out-trip menus are carefully selected to ensure proper caloric intake and nutrition during physical days in the outdoors. Learning how to safely and properly prepare food in the backcountry is part of the program, and participants will have the opportunity to try their hand at cooking. Note that if a Voyageurs camper has a significant dietary restriction, families are encouraged to call the office to ensure out-trip food can accommodate the restriction.

After Care

After Care is extended daytime care on Friday afternoon for families that may need longer child care hours. After Care is based out of Port Moody Recreation Centre and is run by Sasamat Camp Counsellors. Participants will get to enjoy the recreation centre’s playground, as well as low organizational games or activities. The cost is $10 per day, and it runs from when the buses arrive end of day on Friday (i.e. 3:45pm) until 5:30pm.
