2021 Camp Information: From the Director’s Desk

A Note from Kristen,

As summer fast approaches, we are excited to be reaching out with our plans for the upcoming season. While we cannot say “all is back to normal” just yet, we are looking forward to what’s in store for our campers and families.

Given the likelihood that the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to impact our society into the summer months, we have made the difficult choice not to offer overnight camp this year. The health and safety of our campers and staff remains our number one priority, and so we will be turning our attention to our day programs which are more compatible with COVID-19 safety protocols. This summer we will be expanding on what we offered last summer and offering a few new programs as well. Both Rovers and Trailblazers Day Camp Programs will be returning with more capacity and we are bringing back our satellite program, Belcarra Day Camp.  We will also be offering a special teen week of Rovers Day Camp for our senior campers, welcoming back our 12-15-year old campers. We will be offering a brand-new spring afterschool program called Youth Roots for grades 1-7, and Family Camps have also been revamped to welcome families to Sasamat throughout the spring, summer and fall as a safe weekend getaway. Finally, this year we will be taking Sasamat to the school yard with our new mobile outdoor education program for school groups. Lots of work has gone into these new programs and we are so excited to be able to offer youth and families some great new outlets.

While we look forward to the season ahead, we know campers who were hoping to return to their overnight cabins will be disappointed. We know this is hard, and we are hoping you will stick with us. Sasamat has had a challenging year and a half, similar to the tourism sector the camping industry continues to endure a very challenging financial environment. Fixed overhead costs on summer camps are sizeable, and the ongoing restriction on gatherings cuts to the core of what we do. If you are able to support one of our fundraising efforts this year, we would be so grateful for your contributions to help us ensure Sasamat continues to welcome campers for years to come. You can learn more here on the Sasamat donation page.

We thank our entire community of campers, students, parents, teachers, and families for your ongoing patience and support, and we look forward to connecting with you over the coming months.

Until then, take care and we wish you good health.

Kristen Hyodo, Executive Director
